Breaking bread is the easiest way to create a community—there’s nothing like coming together over a warm, steaming bowl of food. At Bison Berry Restaurant in Neechi Commons, this community ethos becomes the basis for a filling, comforting menu of North End classics.
Inside a rustic chic building on Main St, superstore Neechi Commons houses a grocery market, bakery, and art gallery, as well as the restaurant upstairs. The worker co-operative is First Nations owned and operated, and following suit, the restaurant serves traditional specialties.
The airy, second floor space is often bustling, alive with chatter from tables grabbing lunch or all day breakfast. Friendly servers bring menus and dishes to the table, while payment and take out orders are taken at the cafeteria style counter, where you can also browse the day’s baked goods.
Hearty lunches and all day breakfast items make up the no-fuss menu. Local ingredients that have been eaten on this land for thousands of years appear in flavourful, contemporary iterations, like burgers made with bison, and croquettes and warm rice pudding made with marsh grain, wild rice.
The Bison Berry is a menu highlight. The sandwich is piled with tender, slow-braised and shredded bison. The sweet touch of blueberry barbeque sauce tops it all off.
Those in the mood for a hearty, stick-to-your-ribs meal should opt for “Kookum’s Boule”. The traditional Metis dish is made up of hefty meatballs, perfectly savoury and juicy, on a bed of smashed potatoes and served under a drizzle of gravy.
Breakfast is served all day with items like bannock french toast blending traditional signatures with contemporary morning fare. Standards like eggs and bacon and breakfast burritos are elevated with housemade sausage and chorizo.
The blend of no-fuss, homestyle cooking with pops of local taste and creative ingredients gives the sense of a restaurant that is fully engaged and invested in its community. Regional cuisine takes many forms; somehow, something as simple as a burger on a bannock bun can come to stand for everything we love about our city.
Bison Berry Restaurant is open Mon-Fri 7 am-3 pm, Sat 7 am-4 pm, and Sun 10 am-2pm.
